Vice President Kashim Shettima says Nigeria’s planned digital addressing system will strengthen national security, financial inclusion, emergency response and public service delivery.

The National Addressing Council, chaired by Shettima, approved a preliminary framework for a nationwide digitised addressing system designed to locate households and legitimate businesses across the country.

Shettima said the system would also support economic planning and service delivery while protecting citizens’ privacy. He stressed that rural communities must benefit alongside major cities.

The Vice President said the system would be linked securely with Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure and other government databases. The National Identity Management Commission will handle individual verification, while the Corporate Affairs Commission will support business address verification.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described the initiative as important to Nigeria’s economic transformation and investor confidence.

The National Addressing Council is expected to continue work on implementation and coordination among relevant government agencies and stakeholders.
