President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi and other presidential candidates have signed a National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The candidates and political parties pledged to promote issue-based campaigns and reject violence, hate speech, misinformation, personal attacks and other actions capable of undermining the electoral process.
The accord was signed in Abuja on Tuesday, ahead of the official commencement of public campaigns and rallies on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Those who signed included Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Peter Obi; Social Democratic Party candidate Adewole Adebayo; and African Action Congress candidate Omoyele Sowore.
Speaking through Akume, Tinubu urged political actors to put national interest above personal ambitions and campaign on ideas, policies and programmes rather than ethnic or religious sentiments.
Amupitan described elections as a competition for public office rather than warfare, urging candidates to focus on issues affecting Nigerians, including the economy, security, healthcare, education and infrastructure.
However, Sowore questioned the effectiveness of peace accords, describing the latest agreement as largely ceremonial and calling for enforceable sanctions against those who violate its provisions.
The Nigeria Police pledged neutrality and assured voters, candidates and other participants of security throughout the electoral process.
