A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State led by former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola has endorsed the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Oyinlola announced the endorsement on Sunday in Osogbo, citing what he described as a lack of inclusiveness in Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.
The former governor, alongside former Secretary to the State Government Fatai Akinbade and former PDP National Vice Chairman, Southwest, Tajudeen Oladipo, said the decision was based on their conviction that Osun needed a different direction.
Oyinlola, however, stressed that the group had not defected from the PDP.
“We remain PDP members. We are not here to announce our defection from the PDP. Rather, we are exercising our conscience as stakeholders who have served this state and who believe that, at this particular moment, Osun State requires a different direction,” he said.
He urged Oyebamiji to run an inclusive government and prioritise good governance, infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, youth empowerment and economic development if elected.
Akinbade and Oladipo also called on PDP members across the state to support Oyebamiji at the polls.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, welcomed the endorsement and urged residents to remain peaceful ahead of the election.
Oyebamiji thanked the group for its support and pledged to run an inclusive government if elected.
The development comes days before the August 15 Osun governorship election, where Oyebamiji of the APC will face Governor Ademola Adeleke of the PDP and other candidates.
