The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has said that the credibility of the next elections will depend largely on the determination of Nigerians to protect their votes.
Obi made the remarks on Friday while speaking with journalists after attending the burial of the late Pa Simon Okorie Abaa, father of the NDC’s Ebonyi South senatorial candidate, Chief Linus Okorie, at Isiama Primary School in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Reflecting on his relationship with Linus Okorie, Obi said they had worked together in the Labour Party before joining the NDC, describing their association as a longstanding one.
He also paid tribute to the deceased, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and asking God to grant the bereaved family the strength to bear the loss.
Speaking on the 2027 elections, the former Anambra State governor said his confidence was rooted in the resolve of Nigerians rather than the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the electoral body will only deliver credible polls if citizens remain determined to ensure that their votes count.
Obi urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s current situation and decide whether they wanted a different future, stressing that those advocating change were making significant sacrifices for the nation’s progress.
He expressed concern over the country’s worsening economic conditions, saying poverty and hunger had continued to rise across communities.
The NDC presidential candidate noted that the growing hardship was evident in rural areas and warned that millions of Nigerians were struggling to meet basic needs.
Obi also dismissed fears that opposition supporters might be intimidated during the election period, arguing that Nigerians were already facing greater hardship through widespread hunger and economic difficulties.
He called on citizens to unite in demanding better governance, insisting that the country could not continue on its present path.
