The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has approved the appointment of General Officers Commanding (GOCs) for the Nigerian Army’s newly established divisions following President Bola Tinubu’s approval for the creation of four additional divisions.
The development is part of efforts to strengthen the Army’s force structure, expand its operational presence and improve its response to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
In a statement on Wednesday, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said the new divisions would begin operations upon attaining Initial Operational Capability (IOC), with plans to gradually achieve Full Operational Capability (FOC).
As part of the restructuring, the Army has also reviewed its Areas of Responsibility. Under the new arrangement, 2 Division, headquartered in Ibadan, will oversee security operations in Oyo, Osun, Ekiti and Ondo states.
Other newly created formations include 5 Division in Makurdi, 9 Division in Ilorin and 10 Division in Jalingo, while 83 Division, headquartered in Benin City, is expected to become operational later this year.
The COAS also approved the redeployment of senior officers to lead the new formations.
Major General Auwalu Mahmuda has been appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, Ibadan, after his redeployment from the Army Headquarters Directorate of Inspection and Compliance.
Major General Yakubu Yahaya will head the newly established 9 Division in Ilorin, while Major General Chinedu Ralph Nnebeife takes charge of 10 Division in Jalingo. Major General Moses Gara has been appointed GOC 5 Division, Makurdi, where he will also serve as Commander of Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke.
The Army also activated three new brigades. Brigadier General A.O. Odubiyi will command 11 Brigade, Gboko; Brigadier General A.M. Haruna takes charge of 29 Brigade, Kainji; while Brigadier General R.M. Aminu has been appointed Commander of 10 Brigade, Lafia.
Lt.-Gen. Shaibu congratulated the newly appointed commanders and urged them to provide effective leadership, maintain operational momentum and uphold professionalism in carrying out their responsibilities.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty, securing lives and property, and enhancing national security through improved command, faster troop deployment and stronger operational coordination.
