The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) operators and seized equipment allegedly used for unauthorised enrolment activities.
The arrests followed an enforcement operation conducted by the commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit in Gwagwalada and other locations.
In a statement, NIMC said the operation was part of efforts to tackle illegal enrolment, unauthorised modification of personal data and extortion, while protecting the integrity and security of Nigeria’s identity management system.
The commission warned that NIN enrolment must only be carried out at approved centres, while requests for personal data modification should be processed through its official self-service platform.
NIMC also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the Google Play Store or iOS App Store to access security features, print their NIN slips and use other services.
The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reaffirmed the commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and unethical practices, assuring Nigerians and legal residents of its commitment to providing efficient NIN services.
The commission urged members of the public to use only approved channels for NIN enrolment and related services and to visit its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, for accurate information.
