Five die, three rescued as Kano fire incidents destroy ₦120.45m property in June.

No fewer than five people lost their lives in fire and other emergency incidents across Kano State in June, while property valued at ₦120.45 million was destroyed, according to the Kano State Fire Service.

The agency disclosed this in its operational report for June, which highlighted the scale of emergency response activities carried out across the state’s 44 local government areas.

According to the report, the Fire Service responded to 30 fire outbreaks, seven rescue operations and one false alarm during the month under review.

The report stated that five people died in separate fire and emergency incidents, while firefighters successfully rescued three others through timely intervention.

It also revealed that fire outbreaks destroyed property estimated at ₦120.45 million, but the swift response of firefighters helped save assets worth about ₦481.8 million, preventing further losses.

The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, attributed the success in limiting the extent of damage to the prompt response of emergency personnel and the agency’s continued commitment to protecting lives and property.

He, however, urged residents to adopt safer practices when handling fire to reduce the occurrence of avoidable incidents.

According to him, members of the public should ensure that cooking stoves, gas cylinders, electrical appliances and all other sources of fire are properly switched off or completely extinguished after use.

He stressed that greater public awareness and adherence to basic fire safety measures would significantly reduce the number of fire outbreaks across the state.

The Fire Service also appealed to parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, particularly during the rainy season, when the risk of drowning incidents increases.

Residents were advised to prevent children from playing around ponds, rivers, drainage channels, flooded areas and uncovered wells, warning that such environments pose serious dangers during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Kano State Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening emergency response services, enhancing public safety awareness and working closely with communities to prevent fire outbreaks and other emergencies while safeguarding lives and property across the state.
