Dangote Refinery surpasses US supply, exports N757bn jet fuel to Europe.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery exported approximately 466,000 metric tonnes of aviation fuel to Europe in June 2026, reinforcing Nigeria’s growing position as a major supplier of refined petroleum products to the international market.

The June shipment, estimated at about 582.5 million litres of jet fuel, is valued at roughly N757 billion, based on an average domestic price of N1,300 per litre. The export volume represents the refinery’s highest monthly jet fuel shipment to Europe since it commenced aviation fuel production in 2024.

The surge in exports also placed Nigeria ahead of the United States and several other traditional suppliers during the month, highlighting the increasing influence of Dangote Refinery in the global aviation fuel market.

The increase in exports came as the European jet fuel market experienced a significant shift, with prices declining after earlier spikes triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Market analysts attributed the softer prices to increased refinery production, improved global supply and slower-than-expected growth in aviation fuel demand across Europe.

Industry observers noted that the influx of cargoes from Nigeria, alongside shipments from other producing countries, contributed to an oversupplied European market. They explained that many refiners had delayed scheduled maintenance earlier in the year to maximise production while fuel prices remained high, resulting in increased volumes entering the market.

Despite the temporary oversupply, analysts believe Nigeria is well positioned to remain a key exporter, especially as global airlines continue to expand operations and demand for aviation fuel gradually strengthens during the peak travel season.

Recent market trends also indicate that while exports from the United States declined sharply in June, Nigeria significantly increased its shipments, enabling Dangote Refinery to emerge as one of Europe’s leading suppliers of jet fuel during the period.

Other major exporters, including Saudi Arabia and India, also recorded increased shipments to Europe, while supply from some Gulf producers remained limited. Market participants expect export patterns to continue evolving depending on geopolitical developments, refinery operations and global demand for aviation fuel.

The refinery’s growing export capacity reflects Nigeria’s broader transformation into a major exporter of refined petroleum products. Since commencing full operations, Dangote Refinery has steadily increased production of petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, supplying both the domestic market and international buyers.

Official industry data also show that the refinery exported more than 1.6 billion litres of refined petroleum products in April 2026 alone, comprising petrol, diesel and aviation fuel. The sustained rise in production has significantly reduced Nigeria’s dependence on imported refined products while creating new opportunities for foreign exchange earnings through exports.

Energy experts say the refinery’s expanding footprint in international markets is strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global downstream petroleum industry. They believe continued investments in refining capacity, combined with stable production, could further establish the country as one of Africa’s leading export hubs for refined petroleum products.

With production continuing to rise and overseas demand remaining strong, Dangote Refinery is expected to play an increasingly important role in regional and global energy markets, further supporting Nigeria’s transition from a major importer of refined petroleum products to a competitive exporter.
