President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and other relevant stakeholders, to commence a nationwide programme within the next 30 days to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians.
The initiative, known as The Power Force, is part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at creating jobs, bridging Nigeria’s metering gap and strengthening the country’s electricity sector.
According to the President, the programme will provide participants with practical technical skills and connect them with employment opportunities in the power industry.
Tinubu said the initiative is open to eligible Nigerians who have completed their secondary school education, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
He explained that the Presidential Metering Initiative was established to eliminate the country’s metering deficit, end estimated billing, protect electricity consumers and improve transparency in the power sector.
The President noted that expanding access to prepaid meters would ensure households and businesses pay only for the electricity they consume while improving revenue collection for electricity distribution companies. He added that the reforms would help reduce losses, improve infrastructure, expand electricity access and enhance service delivery.
Tinubu urged qualified young Nigerians to take advantage of the programme, announcing that applications will open on July 4, 2026, through the Presidential Metering Initiative portal.
