The Federal Government is considering a new initiative that would allow journalists to accompany military personnel during selected security operations as part of efforts to improve public understanding of the country’s security challenges.
The proposal was disclosed by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, during the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Abuja. He was represented at the event by his Special Adviser, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole.
According to the minister, the planned arrangement is aimed at strengthening collaboration between the media and security agencies while promoting greater transparency in military operations.
He noted that the media plays a vital role in shaping public perception of national security and explained that modern security challenges are influenced not only by military actions but also by the information and narratives surrounding them.
The minister said the initiative would provide journalists with firsthand insight into military operations, enabling more accurate reporting and a better understanding of the realities faced by security personnel.
He added that the Ministry of Defence is exploring practical frameworks for implementing the programme as part of broader efforts to improve communication between the military and the public.
Gen. Musa emphasized that effective cooperation between the media and security agencies would help build public confidence in security institutions and support ongoing efforts to address the nation’s security challenges.
