The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has commenced preparations for the forthcoming local government council elections with an interactive meeting involving representatives of registered political parties across the state.

The meeting, held at the commission’s headquarters in Ibadan, provided an opportunity for OYSIEC to distribute election guidelines to political parties ahead of their primaries, which are scheduled to take place between June 29 and July 27, 2026.

Speaking during the engagement, OYSIEC Chairman, Dr. Afeez Adeniyi, underscored the crucial role of political parties in ensuring a credible, transparent and peaceful electoral process. He urged parties to conduct their primaries within the approved timetable and submit the names of successful candidates to the commission in accordance with the electoral law.

Dr. Adeniyi advised party leaders to study and comply with the election guidelines, noting that adherence to the regulations would help reduce pre-election disputes and ensure a smooth electoral process.

He also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting the local government elections in line with the relevant laws and assured stakeholders that OYSIEC officials would monitor party primaries and provide necessary guidance throughout the process.

The OYSIEC Chairman further encouraged political parties to promote greater participation of women in leadership and elective positions, describing their inclusion as essential to strengthening democratic governance and development.

Speaking on behalf of the political parties, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Oyo State, Kabiru Akinade, raised concerns about some of the challenges associated with the conduct of local government elections in the country and called for continued collaboration among stakeholders.

Also at the meeting, the Oyo State Women Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Mrs. Olajumoke Odususi, appealed for increased representation of women in electoral activities and decision-making positions, stressing the importance of inclusive participation as preparations for the elections continue.
