The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed reports claiming that the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS) was compromised by a cyberattack, describing the allegations as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Monday by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the ministry said the NEMIS platform was never hacked, breached or subjected to any form of cyberattack.

According to the ministry, the integrity, confidentiality and availability of data on the platform remain fully intact.

It explained that the temporary warning message experienced by some users was caused by a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate configuration issue at the hosting level, which briefly affected secure access to the platform.

The ministry stressed that the incident was purely technical and did not involve unauthorised access, data loss, data alteration or exposure of sensitive information.

It added that its technical team, in collaboration with the hosting service provider, promptly resolved the issue and restored normal access to the platform.

The ministry also clarified that browser security warnings or SSL certificate alerts should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of a cyberattack or data breach.

It noted that the Nigeria Education Data Infrastructure serves as the Federal Government’s framework for strengthening education data governance, integration and accessibility across the education sector, while NEMIS remains a key platform for the collection, management and utilisation of education data nationwide.

According to the statement, the ministry continues to implement robust cybersecurity measures, continuous system monitoring and periodic security assessments to safeguard the platform and protect users’ data.

The ministry urged media organisations and members of the public to verify information before publication to avoid creating unnecessary concern or undermining confidence in government digital platforms.

It also advised stakeholders and the general public to disregard reports suggesting that the NEMIS platform had been compromised, insisting that the claims are entirely unfounded.
