Three Nigerian nationals — William Elvis, Moses Hezekiah, and Destiny Oghentega — are facing charges in a United States federal court in Rhode Island over their alleged roles in a sophisticated online romance and wire fraud scheme.

According to court filings, the trio has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, with authorities alleging that the operation dates back to early 2021. Investigators claim the scheme involved a network of individuals who used false identities to deceive unsuspecting victims, primarily through online platforms.

The suspects and their alleged accomplices reportedly posed as professionals working abroad, carefully building trust and emotional connections with their targets over an extended period. By cultivating these relationships, they were able to manipulate victims into believing they were in genuine personal or romantic engagements.

Once trust was established, the perpetrators allegedly began making repeated financial requests under various pretences. These included claims of urgent medical needs, legal troubles, travel expenses, or other forms of financial hardship. Victims were persuaded to send money multiple times, often believing they were helping someone they had come to care about deeply.

Authorities say the funds were transferred using several methods designed to make tracking difficult. These included gift cards, cryptocurrency transactions such as Bitcoin, and direct transfers into bank accounts believed to be controlled by members of the fraud network.

One of the reported victims is an elderly resident of Rhode Island, highlighting concerns about the vulnerability of older individuals to such emotionally manipulative scams. The case underscores the growing scale and complexity of online romance fraud, where perpetrators exploit trust and emotional connection for financial gain.

If convicted, the defendants could face significant penalties under U.S. federal law, as investigations continue into the full scope of the operation and any additional individuals who may be involved.
