Nigeria is preparing to deploy a new batch of 25 ambassador-designates to various countries around the world, following the completion of diplomatic clearances from their respective host nations.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria, Kimiebi Ebienfa, confirmed that the federal government has successfully secured formal approvals—known in diplomatic practice as agrément—from the countries where the envoys are expected to serve. This approval represents the official consent of host governments after conducting their internal assessments of the nominated diplomats.

According to him, the next phase of the process will involve a structured induction and orientation programme scheduled to take place between April 27 and April 29, 2026. The programme is designed to prepare the ambassador-designates and, in some cases, their spouses, for the responsibilities, expectations, and protocols associated with representing Nigeria abroad.

The training will cover key aspects of diplomatic engagement, including international relations etiquette, administrative responsibilities, conduct in host countries, and the strategic priorities of Nigeria’s foreign policy. Officials say the induction is a crucial step in ensuring that newly appointed envoys are fully equipped to effectively represent the country’s interests on the global stage.

Ebienfa explained that once the induction is completed, the ambassadors who have already received host country clearance will immediately proceed to their respective countries of assignment. However, he noted that a few diplomatic missions may still be awaiting final approval, meaning deployment to those locations could take a little longer.

He further emphasised that the issuance of agrément reflects a significant level of trust and acceptance by host governments, following thorough vetting processes to ensure that the nominees meet international diplomatic standards.

The planned deployment is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government to strengthen its diplomatic presence and improve engagement with countries across different regions. By filling these ambassadorial positions, the administration aims to enhance bilateral relations, promote economic cooperation, and improve consular services for Nigerians living abroad.

Officials also noted that the induction programme will serve as an opportunity to align the incoming ambassadors with current national priorities in foreign policy, including trade expansion, investment promotion, security cooperation, and diaspora engagement.

Once deployed, the ambassadors are expected to represent Nigeria in key international missions, working to advance national interests while maintaining strong diplomatic relations with host countries.
