The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening infrastructure and connectivity across the state, announcing a series of major project approvals aimed at linking all six geopolitical zones through durable road networks and improved public facilities.

The development followed a recent State Executive Council meeting, where several key projects were approved to enhance transportation, energy, education, and security across the state.

Among the major road projects approved is the reconstruction of the 30-kilometre Igboho–Kishi Road in the Oke-Ogun axis, valued at ₦38.69 billion. The project is expected to significantly improve access and economic activities in the region. Similarly, the Council approved the reconstruction of the 38.9-kilometre Ido–Akufo–Eruwa Road in the Ibarapa axis at a cost of ₦50.34 billion, further boosting inter-community connectivity and mobility.

In the energy sector, the Council approved the construction and installation of a 12-megawatt Ibadan Independent Gas Power Plant project, estimated at ₦27.33 billion. The project is designed to provide stable and uninterrupted electricity to critical government infrastructure, including the State Secretariat, Government House, High Courts, state hospitals, the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, and the Lekan Salami Stadium.

To complement ongoing urban infrastructure upgrades, the government also approved the extension of high mast floodlight installations through a hybrid power system across selected areas in the Ibadan metropolis. The project is valued at ₦8.97 billion and is expected to enhance security, improve nighttime visibility, and support economic activities within the city.

On education, the Council approved the release of ₦3.55 billion as counterpart funding to access the Universal Basic Education Commission intervention grant for the 2024 UBEC/SUBEB programme. This funding will support critical improvements in public basic education across the state.

In addition, the government approved ₦3.79 billion for the remodelling and reconstruction of a long-abandoned library building located behind the Government House. The facility, left uncompleted for over two decades, will be transformed into a modern knowledge and learning centre upon completion.

Further strengthening the education sector, ₦221.02 million was approved for the conduct of second and third term unified examinations for public primary school pupils across the state.

The Council also approved ₦1.33 billion for the construction of a new office complex for the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency, as part of efforts to enhance institutional capacity and promote accountability in governance.

In the area of security, the government approved the construction of a permanent site for a Nigeria Mobile Police Squadron in Ago-Are, located in the Oke-Ogun zone, at a cost of ₦5.86 billion. The project is expected to bolster security presence in the area and address concerns related to banditry and other criminal activities.

Overall, the approvals reflect a broad strategy by the Oyo State Government to drive sustainable development through improved infrastructure, reliable energy supply, quality education, and strengthened security across the state.
