Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on traditional rulers across Nigeria, particularly in the Southwest, to prioritise peace and drive development within their domains.

Obasanjo made the call during the installation and presentation of the staff of office to the new Odemo of Isara Kingdom, Oba Peter Oluwole Ogunbayo.

He emphasised that traditional rulers occupy a strategic position in national development and must complement government efforts by mobilising their communities to achieve grassroots progress.

Congratulating the new monarch, Obasanjo urged him to foster unity, maintain harmony within Isara and neighbouring communities, and work towards sustainable development.

He also commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for approving the installation of the monarch.

Obasanjo noted that the essence of installing traditional rulers is to enhance peace and promote development, urging Oba Ogunbayo to continue his involvement in community development.

Also speaking, the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, advised the new monarch to reconcile with other contenders for the throne and prioritise peace and unity.

Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, described the installation as a reflection of the government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage. He noted that due process was followed in selecting the monarch and urged residents to support him.

Hamzat also warned against land grabbing, stressing that the state government would not tolerate the involvement of traditional rulers in illegal land dealings. He charged the new monarch to support efforts aimed at curbing such activities.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Ogunbayo called for unity and pledged to run an inclusive administration that would involve all stakeholders, including ruling houses, youths, women, and members of the diaspora.

He also announced plans to establish a Royal Economic Advisory Council to drive development and promote growth and sustainability in the Isara Kingdom.
