The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has cautioned political actors against exploiting religion for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at his residence in Ibadan during the Eid el-Fitr celebration, the monarch urged Nigerians to move beyond divisive tendencies, stressing that religion should no longer play a role in the country’s political process.
According to him, Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape does not support the manipulation of religious sentiments, noting that people of diverse backgrounds must continue to coexist and participate in governance without bias.
Addressing security concerns in Oyo State, particularly incidents of kidnapping, the monarch acknowledged existing challenges but maintained that security agencies are making progress in tackling them. He described many of the cases as criminal acts driven by extortion rather than organised terrorism.
The monarch cited a recent incident along the Oluyole axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, revealing that suspects had been arrested and victims rescued, a development he said demonstrates ongoing efforts to address insecurity.
However, he identified land grabbing as a more serious threat to Ibadan’s socio-economic development, warning that the practice could discourage investment and hinder growth in the region.
Despite these concerns, Oba Ladoja assured residents that traditional institutions are working closely with government authorities to address security issues and curb illegal land activities. He added that community sensitisation efforts and the revitalisation of local vigilante structures are underway to maintain order and protect residents.
