The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation following the emergence of a viral video in which an individual identified as Shawama allegedly claimed responsibility for the killing of 32 people.

In an official response, the Command clarified that there is no record indicating that the individual has ever been arrested or detained by its operatives. Despite this, authorities stated that the claims made in the video are being treated with utmost seriousness due to their grave nature.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, a comprehensive probe has been initiated to verify the authenticity of the video and the statements made within it. He explained that the investigation will rely heavily on modern techniques, including digital forensics and analysis of online footprints, to track down the individual and determine the credibility of the claims.

The police emphasized their commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order, noting that any individual found to be involved in criminal activities would be brought to justice in accordance with the law. As part of the ongoing effort, the Command has called on members of the public to assist with useful information that could help identify and locate the suspect, as well as any possible accomplices.

Authorities assured residents that the investigation is being handled with diligence and professionalism, adding that updates will be provided as new findings emerge.

In the widely circulated video, recorded in Yoruba, the individual was heard making disturbing statements, including an admission of involvement in multiple killings. He also made claims suggesting that security agencies had previously released and even praised him—an assertion the police have neither confirmed nor validated, but are now examining as part of the inquiry.

The footage also featured other individuals who expressed political support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu in relation to the 2027 general elections, further drawing public attention and concern over the content of the video.

The Command reiterated its appeal for calm, urging residents not to spread unverified information or jump to conclusions, while assuring that all necessary steps are being taken to uncover the truth behind the incident.
