The Kaduna State Government says it has recovered more than 500,000 hectares of farmland previously controlled by bandits over the past three years.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, disclosed this in Kaduna, attributing the development to improved security measures that have enabled farmers to return to their farms.

Maiyaki said bandits previously controlled some rural communities, imposing taxes and restricting farming activities.

He said the government had combined security operations with community-led measures involving traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders.

According to him, 75 potential security threats were detected between 2023 and early 2026, with 70 successfully addressed.

Maiyaki also said the state’s agricultural budget increased from N1.4 billion in 2023 to more than N100 billion in 2026. He said the funding had supported the distribution of fertiliser and improved agricultural yields.

He added that maize production had increased from about three bags per hectare to as many as 22 bags in some areas.

The commissioner said the government would continue to assess its programmes based on their impact on residents, stressing that improved security remained essential to progress in agriculture and other sectors.
