Victims and families affected by the explosion in the Dejo Oyelese area have expressed concern over not receiving additional compensation from the Oyo State government.

The call comes after reports that the Federal Government of Nigeria had released ₦30 billion to the state in response to the incident, with a remaining ₦20 billion of the approved ₦50 billion yet to be disbursed. The state government clarified that the ₦30 billion is currently held in a bank, awaiting the release of the balance.

The Chairman of the Bodija Estate Residents Association (BERA), Dr. Muyiwa Bamgbose, stated that initially, compensation for affected residents was reduced due to limited funds. However, with the revelation of the federal funds, he appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde to use the ₦30 billion to provide additional compensation to those who suffered losses.

Bamgbose added that the association has formally written to the state government requesting a meeting to discuss reviewing the compensation and is finalizing plans to escalate the matter to draw government attention to their plight.

The explosion on January 16, 2024, in Dejo Oyelese left five people dead, several others injured, and properties worth hundreds of millions of Naira destroyed. The residents are now seeking fair compensation in light of the available federal funds.
