Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have reportedly arrested a sixth suspect linked to the 2022 terrorist attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo.

The attack, which shocked the nation, was carried out by members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The assailants stormed the church during a service and killed at least 40 worshippers, leaving many others injured and triggering widespread outrage and grief across the country.

In the aftermath of the incident, security agencies launched an extensive manhunt for those believed to have participated in the operation. Five suspects — Idris Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar — were previously apprehended and are currently facing prosecution over their alleged roles in the attack.

The newly arrested suspect, identified as Sani Yusuf, had reportedly evaded capture for nearly four years, making him one of the most sought-after fugitives connected to the Owo massacre. Security sources disclosed that DSS operatives had been tracking his movements over an extended period before finally apprehending him.

Yusuf was reportedly arrested in the Iguosa community, along Powerline axis in Ovia North Local Government Area of Edo State. Intelligence reports indicate that following the church attack, he initially fled to Kano to avoid detection before relocating to the relatively quiet Edo community, where he is said to have kept a low profile.

Authorities believe Yusuf held a significant operational role within ISWAP and may have functioned as a high-ranking commander within the group. His arrest is seen as a major breakthrough in ongoing counterterrorism efforts and a critical step toward ensuring accountability for those responsible for the deadly church assault.

Security agencies have continued to intensify surveillance and intelligence operations nationwide to dismantle terrorist networks and prevent further attacks. The arrest of the sixth suspect is expected to aid investigators in uncovering additional details about the planning, coordination, and execution of the 2022 Owo church attack.
