Immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, is set to be arraigned today before the Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged cybercrime offences and violations of the Nigerian Communications Act.
He is expected to appear before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik to answer a three-count charge filed against him by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Security operatives have taken control of the court premises following the arrival of a large number of supporters and political associates. Officers were deployed to maintain order and prevent any potential security breaches. Access to the courtroom, located on the third floor of the building, has been strictly restricted, with security personnel regulating entry.
At the time of filing this report, both the former governor and the presiding judge were being awaited for the commencement of proceedings.
The charges, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/99/2026, were filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The DSS accused El-Rufai of breaching provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, and the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.
According to the three-count charge, the allegations stem from statements he reportedly made during a television interview on February 13, 2026, in Abuja. The prosecution claims he admitted to unlawfully intercepting the phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
He is also accused of acknowledging his association with individuals involved in the alleged interception without reporting them to relevant security agencies. Furthermore, the charge alleges that he and others at large used technical equipment or systems to unlawfully intercept the communications of the NSA, thereby compromising public safety and national security.
The offences are said to be punishable under relevant sections of the Cybercrimes Act and the Nigerian Communications Act.
