The Presidency has officially confirmed the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and announced the immediate appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police.

In a formal statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accepted the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun following the submission of a letter in which he cited pressing family considerations as the reason for his decision.

According to the statement, the President received the resignation letter earlier in the day and expressed deep appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of dedicated service to the nation and the Nigeria Police Force. The President commended his professionalism, commitment, and efforts toward strengthening the country’s internal security framework during his time in office.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023 and was serving a four-year term scheduled to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. His tenure was marked by ongoing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency, intelligence gathering, and public confidence in the police.

In view of the prevailing security challenges across the country, the President approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect. The appointment, according to the statement, was made in accordance with existing laws and legal guidance.

President Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s capacity to lead the Nigeria Police Force at this critical period. He noted that the Acting IGP brings to the role a wealth of operational experience, leadership expertise, and a strong record of service, which are expected to provide stability and strategic direction for the Force.

The statement further disclosed that, in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President will soon convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following that process, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.

The Presidency reiterated the administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening national security, enhancing institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to carry out its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
