At least three members of the Civilian Protection Group (CPG) have been killed following a deadly attack by armed bandits in Zamfara State.
The incident occurred in Magamin Diddi District of Maradun Local Government Area, where a large number of heavily armed bandits reportedly stormed the community. The assailants were said to have launched a sudden and coordinated assault, engaging members of the local vigilante group in sporadic gunfire.
Residents said the attack created widespread panic as gunshots rang out across the district, forcing many villagers to flee for safety. The Civilian Protection Group members, who had been assisting security agencies in safeguarding their communities against criminal elements, attempted to repel the attackers but were overpowered by the superior firepower of the bandits.
During the confrontation, three CPG members lost their lives. The deceased have been identified as Nasiru Gaji, Jamilu Ibrahim, and Bashar Dan Inna. In addition to the fatalities, the attackers reportedly carted away rifles belonging to the slain vigilantes before retreating from the area.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated to the General Hospital in Maradun, where necessary medical procedures were carried out. They were later released to their families and laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
The latest attack underscores the persistent security challenges confronting communities in Zamfara State, particularly in rural areas where armed groups frequently target local vigilantes and residents. Despite ongoing efforts by security agencies and community-based groups to curb banditry, many communities continue to face threats, leading to loss of lives and property.
Residents have called for intensified security presence and proactive measures to prevent further attacks, expressing concern over the recurring violence in the region.
