The monarch of Agamọ Community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Kehinde Falodun, has reportedly been killed by suspected bandits in a violent attack that has sent shockwaves across the area.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening when armed men stormed the monarch’s palace in an apparent attempt to abduct him. According to reports, the attackers, said to be about ten in number, arrived heavily armed and forcefully gained access to the premises. The traditional ruler was said to have resisted the abduction attempt, confronting the assailants despite the danger.

In the course of the confrontation, the gunmen allegedly opened fire on the monarch. Although several shots were reportedly fired at close range, it was gathered that the bullets did not initially penetrate. The attackers subsequently struck him on the head with a heavy object during the struggle. He was later found a few metres away from the palace with gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene.

The killing has thrown the community into mourning, with residents expressing deep sorrow and outrage over the brazen nature of the attack. Many described the monarch as a respected leader who played a vital role in fostering unity and development within the community. His death has heightened fears among locals, who say insecurity in the area has worsened in recent times.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Mr Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed that an investigation had commenced. He stated that upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer and tactical teams were immediately mobilised to the scene in collaboration with local security outfits.

Security personnel, including operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun, local hunters, and members of the Atuluse security group, combed nearby bushes and surrounding areas in an effort to apprehend the suspects. However, the attackers reportedly fled before security operatives could capture them.

The police spokesperson assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects. He added that monitoring and surveillance activities had been intensified across the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order and to reassure members of the public of their safety.

Residents have called on security agencies to take decisive steps to curb the growing wave of criminal activities in the local government area. Many urged authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, increase patrols, and deploy additional security personnel to vulnerable communities.

The killing of the monarch has further amplified concerns about safety in rural communities, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for coordinated action among security agencies and community leaders to restore peace and confidence among residents. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the heinous act are brought to justice.
