The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has intercepted and seized 64 bags of cannabis sativa concealed inside a trailer transporting cement along the Kano–Zaria Road.

The illegal consignment was recovered on February 2, 2026, during a targeted operation carried out by NDLEA officers attached to the Kiru Area Command. The interception followed intelligence-led surveillance and sustained monitoring of suspected drug trafficking routes within the state.

According to the agency, the trailer was loaded with cement and had departed from Obajana in Kogi State, with its destination reportedly set for Mubi in Adamawa State. Acting on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives stopped and searched the vehicle along the Kano–Zaria corridor, where the concealed drugs were discovered hidden among the legitimate cargo.

The driver of the trailer was immediately arrested and taken into custody. He is currently undergoing interrogation as part of ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering the full extent of the drug trafficking network behind the shipment.

Commander of the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command, D.Y. Lawal, described the operation as a major success resulting from the professionalism, vigilance, and dedication of the agency’s personnel. He noted that traffickers often attempt to conceal illegal substances within legitimate goods in order to evade detection, but emphasized that the agency remains committed to disrupting such criminal activities.

Lawal further disclosed that preliminary findings suggest the cannabis consignment was intended for distribution within Kano and possibly surrounding areas ahead of the Ramadan period, when law enforcement agencies typically intensify surveillance due to increased commercial and social activities.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening its enforcement strategies, including expanding intelligence gathering, intensifying patrols along major highways, and reinforcing checkpoints across key entry and exit routes in the state.

The NDLEA also confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the trafficking operation, including suppliers, distributors, and accomplices. The agency assured that all those found to be connected to the illegal shipment would be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The command reiterated its resolve to combat drug trafficking and related crimes, stressing that such activities pose serious threats to public health, safety, and national security.

The agency also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and support its efforts by providing credible information that could assist in identifying and dismantling drug trafficking networks. It emphasized that community cooperation remains vital in the ongoing fight against illegal drugs and in ensuring safer communities across the country.

The NDLEA assured that it would continue to intensify operations and maintain pressure on drug traffickers in line with its mandate to eliminate the production, distribution, and abuse of illicit substances in Nigeria.
