Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, marking the second system failure recorded in January 2026.
The latest incident comes just days after the first grid collapse of the year, which occurred last Friday, raising fresh concerns about the stability of the country’s power infrastructure.
Confirmation of the collapse was issued by the Nigeria National Grid at about 10:53 a.m. via a brief statement on its official X account. A subsequent update assured the public that restoration efforts were underway.
Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that power generation dropped to zero megawatts following the collapse, plunging several parts of the country into darkness.
Distribution companies affected by the outage include those serving Ikeja, Eko, Ibadan, Abuja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Benin, Enugu, Port Harcourt and Yola, among others.
As of the time of reporting, electricity supply had not yet been fully restored, while power sector authorities continued efforts to stabilize the grid.
The repeated grid failures have triggered renewed public criticism, with many Nigerians describing the situation as a national embarrassment and calling for urgent reforms in the power sector.
