A devastating fire destroyed the RSK Adebowale gas station in the Ofiki district of Saki, Oyo state, on Tuesday evening. A tanker truck, a motorcycle, and other valuables were completely consumed by the flames.

The incident occurred late Tuesday evening as a DAF tanker truck was unloading approximately 50,000 liters of gasoline at the station. According to witnesses, the fire broke out suddenly, causing panic among residents and motorists in the busy area.

One witness, who wished to remain anonymous, told our correspondent that the incident happened around 5 p.m. following an explosion at the power house, which ignited nearby combustible materials and spread to adjoining property. Who reported hearing a loud bang just before the fire started. “We heard an explosion, and within seconds everything was engulfed in flames. The tanker truck, the pumps, and a motorcycle parked nearby were burning.” “People were running for their lives,” he said.

Another resident stated that the intensity of the fire caused shop owners and residents to flee in panic, fearing an explosion due to the large amount of gasoline. “The heat was unbearable. We were all scared because of the gasoline in the tanker truck. Everyone fled,” one resident added.

The Oyo State Fire and Rescue Service Agency was immediately alerted and quickly arrived at the scene. Upon arrival, they found the gas station, the tanker truck, three pumps, and a motorcycle already engulfed in flames. Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings and other businesses.

Security forces were dispatched to the scene to cordon off the area and maintain order while firefighters battled the blaze. This ensured that residents remained a safe distance away.

Although no injuries were reported, the fire caused significant property damage. Goods worth several million naira were destroyed.

Authorities appealed to gas station operators and fuel merchants to strictly adhere to safety regulations, especially during unloading, to prevent further incidents.
