A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to hold high-level consultations with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The South-South Chairman of the PDP, Emmanuel Ogidi, disclosed this on Wednesday during a television interview, describing the planned engagements as part of broader moves to rebuild the party’s national relevance and influence.
According to Ogidi, the party has already begun consultations with key political stakeholders across the country.
“We are reaching out to important personalities in Nigeria to let them know that the PDP is alive and moving forward. We have met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida. We also plan to meet Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar,” he said.
Ogidi noted that both Obi and Atiku have played significant roles in the PDP’s history, having previously served as its vice-presidential and presidential candidates.
Atiku was the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, while Obi was his running mate in the 2019 polls. Both politicians have since moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Meanwhile, the PDP National Working Committee recently held talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja. The delegation was led by the party’s National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki.
Turaki said Jonathan reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP, describing himself as an active and committed member of the party. He added that the former president expressed willingness to continue supporting the PDP as it prepares for upcoming off-season elections and the 2027 polls.
The PDP, which governed Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, has been grappling with internal crises since its defeat in the 2023 elections. The party remains divided, with rival factions laying claim to its national leadership following a controversial convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, that led to the expulsion of several prominent party figures.
Party leaders say ongoing consultations are aimed at unifying the PDP and strengthening its chances ahead of future elections.
