Human rights lawyer and 2027 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Oyo State, Niyi Aborishade, has resigned from the PDP and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Aborishade said his decision was driven by what he described as a deepening internal crisis within the PDP, raising doubts about the party’s ability to present a credible candidate in the next governorship election.
Speaking with journalists in Ibadan, Aborishade said persistent internal conflicts and unresolved leadership disputes made it impossible for him to continue in the party, noting that the situation posed a serious threat to internal democracy.
“As long as the PDP is unable to resolve its internal crisis and key actors refuse to listen to voices of reason, we have decided to move forward. We are moving to the ADC,” he said.
He stated that the ADC had shown readiness to promote democracy, fairness, and equity, adding that he was defecting with supporters from all 33 local government areas of Oyo State.
“I am moving with my supporters across the state. Many of them are leaders within the PDP, and they are moving with us. We will make the ADC popular and formidable,” Aborishade said.
According to him, the ADC currently represents the most viable political platform for progressives committed to justice and good governance.
“The party that resonates with the people today is the ADC, and that is where I belong. I will continue to work for justice and the best interests of Nigeria,” he added.
Reacting to the development, the ADC Chairman in Oyo State, Alhaji Yinka Olona, described the PDP as a party weakened by internal divisions, adding that the ADC is positioned to provide a credible opposition and alternative governance option in the state.
