Vice-President Kashim Shettima has announced that President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate intensification of security operations in Borno State following a deadly terrorist attack on a mosque in Maiduguri.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Vice-President disclosed that additional tactical security teams have been deployed to the state to track down and apprehend those behind the attack. He said the directive underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to respond decisively to acts of terror and to ensure the safety of lives and property.
The attack occurred on Wednesday evening when suspected terrorists stormed the Al-Adum Mosque at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri during prayers. The assault claimed the lives of five worshippers and left several others injured, sparking outrage and grief across the state.
Condemning the incident in strong terms, Shettima described the attack as a despicable and cowardly act against innocent citizens and a direct threat to the peace and unity of the nation. He stressed that targeting worshippers in a place of prayer was unacceptable and would not be allowed to go unpunished.
According to him, the Federal Government is working in close collaboration with the Borno State Government, local security formations, and other relevant agencies to strengthen security around vulnerable communities, places of worship, markets, and critical infrastructure across the North East and beyond.
“The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation,” the Vice-President said, adding that security agencies have been placed on high alert and are working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators are identified, arrested, and brought to justice.
Shettima also expressed deep sympathy with the Borno State Government, the people of the state, and the families of those who lost their lives in the attack. He extended his condolences to the injured and prayed for their speedy recovery, assuring affected communities that the government stands firmly with them during this difficult time.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Tinubu administration to national security, the Vice-President said the government would continue to provide the military, police, and other security agencies with the necessary support, resources, and intelligence needed to combat terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms.
He called on residents to remain calm and vigilant, while urging them to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could help prevent further attacks and restore lasting peace to the region.
