The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the immediate suspension of the implementation of the recently enacted Tax Reform Acts, citing controversies that it says raise serious concerns about the credibility of Nigeria’s lawmaking process.

In a statement signed by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, the association said the circumstances surrounding the passage of the laws have cast doubt on the integrity, transparency and sanctity of the legislative process. It warned that the issues strike at the core of constitutional governance and the rule of law.

The NBA noted that the controversy surrounding the Tax Reform Acts has raised questions about whether due process and established legislative procedures were strictly followed in line with democratic standards.

According to the association, the uncertainty created by the situation poses significant risks to economic stability, as it could unsettle the business environment, erode investor confidence and create unpredictability for individuals and organisations expected to comply with the new tax regime.

The association stressed that laws with far-reaching economic and social consequences must be products of transparent, accountable and credible processes.

“Until these issues are fully examined and resolved, all plans to implement the Tax Reform Acts should be immediately suspended,” the NBA stated.

It further called for a comprehensive, open and transparent investigation into the passage of the laws, urging relevant authorities to act swiftly to restore public confidence in the National Assembly and safeguard constitutional order.

The NBA warned that failure to address the controversy could have long-term consequences for the economy and weaken public trust in governance.
