A civil society organisation, the Centre for Leadership Legacy International (Centre LLI), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to uphold transparency and integrity in governance by thoroughly examining allegations of certificate irregularities involving the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Davies Isaiah Ijele, the group said the allegations have become significant enough to warrant official scrutiny, warning that failure to address them could affect the credibility of the administration.

Centre LLI urged the President to critically review what it described as serial allegations concerning the minister’s educational qualifications, noting that the issues are already in the public domain and continue to generate debate.

According to the group, Tunji-Ojo’s official profile submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during his 2019 House of Representatives election listed a first degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and a postgraduate qualification from London Metropolitan University. The group claimed that the OAU degree allegedly does not indicate a graduation year, while the master’s degree from the London institution reportedly shows 2006 as the year of graduation.

The organisation further raised questions over the minister’s National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) records. It alleged that during his 2023 Senate screening for ministerial appointment, Tunji-Ojo submitted an NYSC discharge certificate dated 2023, explaining that he was first mobilised in 2006 but did not complete service at the time and was later remobilised.

Centre LLI expressed concern over what it described as inconsistencies in the timeline of the minister’s academic and NYSC records, including issues surrounding his remobilisation while serving as a member of the House of Representatives.

The group said the unresolved questions surrounding the claims could undermine public confidence and called on the President to intervene by ordering a thorough investigation in the interest of accountability and good governance.

It urged the government to provide clarity on the matter, stressing that addressing the controversy would help reinforce public trust in the administration’s commitment to transparency.
