The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to strengthening the nation’s judiciary through improved infrastructure, enhanced welfare and sustained policy support.
Wike gave the assurance on Monday in Abuja during a special court session marking the commencement of the 2025/2026 legal year of the Court of Appeal.
He explained that the administration has made provisions in the 2025 budget to build additional residential quarters for FCT High Court judges in order to address accommodation shortages and create a more conducive environment for judicial work. According to him, effective justice delivery requires well-equipped courts, functional chambers and adequate support facilities.
The minister also disclosed that the FCT Administration has handed over the Certificate of Occupancy for the Supreme Court’s permanent site and begun full perimeter fencing of the complex to prevent encroachment and strengthen security. He described the development as a long-awaited intervention that restores confidence in the judiciary and reinforces the administration’s commitment to the rule of law.
Wike noted that President Tinubu has continued to support the judiciary through the construction of residential quarters for heads of courts, the development of a new Magistrate Court Complex in Jabi, the provision of staff quarters for the Nigerian Law School, and the ongoing work on the Court of Appeal Abuja Division Complex as well as residences for justices of the National Industrial Court and the Federal High Court in Abuja. He said these projects were designed to eliminate distractions for judicial officers and enable them to focus on the efficient administration of justice.
As the new legal year begins, Wike reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s resolve to consolidate ongoing reforms and sustain efforts to modernize the judicial system. He said priority will be given to the timely completion of new court facilities and the expansion of digital processes to reduce delays, improve efficiency and enhance the dispensation of justice.
Wike stressed that justice must never be compromised, describing it as the foundation of democracy and a safeguard of public trust. He called on judges, legal practitioners, government agencies and citizens to continue working together to strengthen the nation’s judicial system.
