The House of Representatives has convened a special session to deliberate on Nigeria’s escalating security crisis following a surge in banditry and kidnappings across the country.

Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, in his remarks, appealed to Nigerians to exercise caution in their comments about the state of the nation, noting that security remains a collective responsibility requiring unity and cooperation.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu acknowledged that while Nigeria has robust deterrent laws, the country continues to struggle with poor enforcement and inadequate funding for security agencies, which limits effective response to threats.

During the session, several lawmakers called for the adoption of state or community policing models to enhance grassroots intelligence and rapid response. They also proposed the installation of perimeter fencing in all primary and secondary schools to curb attacks on students.

The legislators further urged citizens to refrain from acts or rhetoric capable of deepening divisions, stressing the need for national cohesion in confronting insecurity.
