FG Begins Confidence-Building Projects Ahead of Oil Exploration Return in Ogoniland

The Federal Government has begun implementing confidence-building measures agreed upon with Ogoni leaders as part of efforts to restart oil exploration in Ogoniland. A key part of this effort is the rehabilitation of major health facilities across the area, including general hospitals in Eleme, Khana, Terabor, and a health centre in K-Dere, Gokana. These projects come after Ogoni leaders outlined several conditions for allowing oil activities to resume, such as establishing the Federal University of Environment and Technology at Saakpenwa/Koroma, completing the Eleme axis of the East-West Road, creating employment opportunities for qualified Ogoni people at NNPC Limited, and improving critical infrastructure in the region.

Most of these demands have reportedly been met, and President Tinubu has sent a monitoring team from the Office of the National Security Adviser, led by Ojukaye Flag-Amachree and other senior officials, to inspect ongoing work. The team visited the university site, hospitals, the East-West Road and the proposed industrial park to verify progress.

Community leaders across Ogoniland expressed relief and optimism. Mene Sunday Kabari-Nule, acting chairman of the Nyo-Khana Area Council of Chiefs and Elders, described the revived hospital projects as a long-awaited blessing that the people are already celebrating. He praised the Federal Government and hoped the work would be completed quickly so the facilities could begin serving the communities.

Local development leaders echoed similar sentiments. Elder Prince Neekpoabie noted that reviving the health projects after years of abandonment would significantly improve healthcare and had already provided jobs for many youths, reducing crime in the area. Youth President Nwikeh Torue pledged full security and cooperation for contractors, assuring them of a peaceful work environment. Project Manager Azubuike Lucky confirmed that community relations had been smooth and that most workers involved are locals.
