Federal Workers Demand Immediate Payment of N35,000 Wage Award Arrears

Federal civil servants have urged the Federal Government to urgently pay the outstanding three months of the N35,000 wage award, citing the rising cost of living and the pressure the delay has placed on workers across the country.

The wage award—introduced in 2023 as a temporary relief measure during ongoing economic reforms—was negotiated following intense labour agitation and threats of nationwide strikes over deteriorating living conditions. Although five months were approved, payments have been made only in staggered tranches, leaving three months still outstanding.

Speaking in Abuja, several workers expressed frustration over the prolonged delay, warning that the government’s perceived indifference could trigger fresh tensions within the labour sector.

A civil servant, Dr. Uche Anune, criticised what he described as a recurring pattern of government inaction until workers resort to protests.

“It seems the government relaxes until people begin to agitate. That should not be the case. Commitments to workers should be honoured without delay,” he said.

Another worker, Mr. Joseph Edeh, questioned the government’s sincerity, noting that only two months have been paid so far.

“They told us we had five months outstanding. After paying two, they just stopped. Why treat workers this way? The government should clear the remaining three months at once,” he said.

Similarly, Miss Franca Ofili said the unpaid arrears continue to worsen financial hardship for many families.

“That N35,000 goes a long way in solving our basic needs. The government should pay everything at once. People are struggling,” she added.

Responding to the concerns, the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation reassured workers that the Federal Government has not abandoned the wage award. The Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Bawa Mokwa, said payments would continue depending on fund availability.

“Contrary to insinuations, the Federal Government has not reneged on payment of the wage award arrears. With the payment of the second tranche in August, three tranches remain. The government will continue to pay N35,000 monthly until all arrears are cleared,” Mokwa stated.

Civil servants, however, stressed that timely payment is essential not only for cushioning the impact of economic reforms but also for maintaining trust in government commitments. They warned that failure to fulfil the agreed wage award could further dampen morale within the public service and heighten the risk of labour unrest.
