Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has said anger and frustration following the club’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League prompted his recent criticism of the club’s leadership and transfer strategy.
The Argentina international had questioned United’s investment in the squad during the summer transfer window and expressed disappointment with technical director Jason Wilcox over recruitment and efforts to strengthen the team.
In a social media post, Martinez explained that his comments were driven by his desire to see United compete for major trophies. He stressed that the club’s history and stature demanded higher standards from everyone involved.
The 28-year-old acknowledged that players must take responsibility for the team’s performances, adding that he was ready to hold himself accountable. He also reaffirmed his confidence in his teammates, manager Michael Carrick and other club officials working to improve the team.
Martinez’s remarks come amid United’s inconsistent run of form, with the club facing increased scrutiny over its performances and recruitment strategy. His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, although the club has an option to extend it by another year.
