The Federal Government has approved plans to develop a new Eastern-Western electricity grid as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s recurring power grid collapses.
The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this at an energy conference in Lagos, stating that the government was preparing to begin the procurement process. He said Nigerians could begin to see the benefits of the project within two to three years.
Tegbe explained that the government had divided the country into three energy zones and identified the Lagos and Abuja corridors as priority areas because of their significant electricity demand.
He added that a nationwide technical audit of electricity infrastructure was underway to identify faults and determine which facilities required urgent repairs or replacement. The exercise is expected to guide investment and ensure resources are directed towards the actual causes of transmission failures.
The minister attributed some of the challenges to ageing infrastructure, noting that certain transmission towers and lines dated back several decades. He said the government intended to prioritise critical areas and strengthen the transmission network to improve electricity supply and reduce system failures.
