The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will build on lessons from previous elections to ensure professionalism before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
Disu gave the assurance while speaking with journalists at the launch of The Origin of Women in Nigeria Police Force, a book written by 96-year-old retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, Stella Okuyiga, in Rivers State.
He said the police had held a conference involving commissioners of police and other senior officers to review experiences from recent elections, identify shortcomings and improve their performance ahead of the 2027 polls.
The IGP expressed confidence that the force would conduct itself professionally and meet Nigerians’ expectations during the elections.
Disu also commended Okuyiga, one of the pioneer female police officers who joined the force in 1955, for documenting her experiences and preserving the history of women in Nigerian policing. He said copies of the book would be made available to police training institutions to educate future generations of officers.
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, praised the retired officer for preserving the contributions of pioneer female officers.
Fubara also announced a donation of N20 million towards the book launch, urging young people, particularly women, to draw inspiration from the pioneers’ courage, discipline and commitment to public service.
