President Bola Tinubu has urged judges to close procedural loopholes and review outdated legal precedents that allow politically exposed persons and organised crime suspects to delay or frustrate criminal trials.
Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the 8th annual capacity-building workshop for judges and justices, organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI).
The President described corruption as a threat to Nigeria’s survival, urging the judiciary to strengthen its capacity to handle financial crimes in the digital age, including cryptocurrency fraud and offences involving artificial intelligence and blockchain technology.
He said the EFCC recorded 10,872 convictions from 14,476 cases filed within the first 34 months of his administration. The commission also recovered N1.233 trillion, alongside millions of dollars and other foreign currencies, during the period.
Tinubu called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, stressing the need for an independent and progressive justice system that ensures accountability regardless of an individual’s status.
Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, also emphasised the importance of judicial training and effective case management in addressing the growing complexity of digital evidence and financial crimes.
