A major disaster was averted after a tanker carrying 33,000 litres of ethanol fell at the Second Rainbow Bridge in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the incident occurred on Wednesday when the FOTON truck, with registration number APP 346 YC, fell while negotiating a turn. Preliminary investigations attributed the incident to speeding, which caused the truck’s turntable to detach and obstruct the road.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said emergency responders immediately cordoned off the area due to the risk of fire and explosion posed by the highly volatile substance.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service applied chemical foam to the tanker and surrounding area to suppress fumes and prevent a possible explosion. The police and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority also assisted in securing the scene and controlling traffic.
LASEMA confirmed that no casualties were recorded, crediting the swift and coordinated response of emergency agencies with preventing a major disaster.
In a separate incident, the agency said a Dangote cement truck became stuck on a road divider at Oke Koto, Agege, obstructing traffic. The truck was removed using heavy-duty recovery equipment, and the road was reopened without any reported injuries or deaths.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged motorists to obey speed limits and traffic regulations, particularly when transporting hazardous materials.
