The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced plans to prioritise the proposed State Police Bill, Reserved Seats for Women Bill and other outstanding legislation as lawmakers resume plenary after their annual recess.
Abbas disclosed this on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja, where he proposed a 100-day legislative programme to accelerate work on pending bills, clear outstanding committee reports and strengthen oversight.
He urged lawmakers not to allow preparations for the 2027 general elections to distract them from their responsibilities, stressing that political campaigns must not take precedence over national interests.
The Speaker also called on the executive to submit the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for the 2027 budget early enough to allow proper scrutiny and timely passage of the Appropriation Bill.
Abbas said the House would also focus on bills and requests submitted by President Bola Tinubu, including the National Research Development Fund Bill and the domestication of the Geneva Conventions and their relevant protocols.
He disclosed that the House had received 2,747 bills and passed 363 by mid-June 2026. He said lawmakers had completed between 65 and 70 per cent of the key milestones in their legislative agenda.
Abbas added that the House would publish a legislative scorecard and legacy report before the end of the 10th Assembly to enable Nigerians to assess its performance.
He urged members to improve attendance at plenary and committee sittings, strengthen oversight of public spending and ensure that laws and investigations produce tangible benefits for Nigerians.
