Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has said he would restore petrol subsidy if elected president in 2027, saying corruption was the major problem with the subsidy system.

Obi made the statement during a BBC interview on Tuesday, reversing his earlier position during the 2023 presidential campaign, when he supported removing the subsidy and redirecting the funds to education, healthcare and infrastructure.

The former Anambra State governor said his administration would first tackle the corruption associated with the subsidy regime before reintroducing it. His position came about two weeks after his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also backed the reintroduction of subsidy in a different form.
