The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has stopped selling Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, to major marketers who import petroleum products into Nigeria.
A refinery official said the decision was based on concerns that some importers were blending Dangote’s Euro-5 petrol with imported products of uncertain quality. The refinery said it preferred to sell to independent marketers and other buyers who do not import petrol.
The development has raised concerns among fuel importers and marketers, who accused Dangote of attempting to block petrol imports. They argued that imports remain necessary to maintain adequate supply when local production falls and challenged the refinery to provide evidence that imported petrol does not meet required quality standards.
The National Vice Chairman of IPMAN, Hamed Fashola, said independent marketers buy from both local refineries and importers based on the best available price. IPMAN’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Ukadike, however, said the refinery was within its rights to take measures it considers necessary to discourage the blending or adulteration of petroleum products.
