Former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has urged the Federal Government to treat education as a fundamental right and avoid placing additional financial burdens on students through loans.

Shittu, who spoke during an interview on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, said government policies should prioritise access to education for children from poor families, alongside employment, healthcare and other basic needs.

He questioned the rationale for student loans when many graduates remain unemployed years after leaving tertiary institutions. Shittu also urged the government to implement the education objectives contained in the 1999 Constitution and invest more resources in human development.

The former minister said greater investment in education would help equip young Nigerians with skills and reduce future social problems, stressing that government policies should be measured by their impact on ordinary citizens, particularly low-income families
