African Democratic Congress chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, has said he was misled when he previously defended former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi against claims that his administration left debts and other financial obligations.
Okonkwo, who served as Obi’s spokesperson during the 2023 presidential campaign, said he could no longer repeat his earlier claims after fresh disclosures by the Anambra State Government. He said the state government had presented records showing eight external financing facilities associated with Obi’s tenure, while also alleging unpaid salary arrears at the state-owned water corporation.
The controversy remains disputed. The Anambra Government says the eight facilities had a combined value of $123.77 million, with $92.35 million outstanding as of June 30, 2026. Obi has rejected the description of the figure as debt he left behind, arguing that the facilities were multilateral development programmes and that the state’s figures should distinguish between approved financing, amounts drawn and the balance outstanding when he left office in 2014.
