Nigeria, EU Move to Finalise Readmission Agreement

Nigeria and the European Union have renewed efforts to conclude the long-pending EU-Nigeria Readmission Agreement as part of strengthened cooperation on migration.

The agreement, initiated in 2016, was discussed by Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Brunner stressed the importance of finalising the agreement, saying it would provide a framework for broader migration cooperation between Nigeria and the EU.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu called for migration cooperation to include reintegration support for returnees, infrastructure assistance and expanded legal pathways for Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad.
