The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has called on former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race over claims concerning his financial record while in office.
In a statement by its spokesman, Dele Alake, the council cited figures released by the Anambra State Government, claiming that Obi’s administration spent about $4.05 billion and contracted $123.77 million in external loans during his eight-year tenure.
The council said the loans were obtained for projects including erosion control, healthcare, malaria eradication and education, and remained active when Obi left office in March 2014.
Alake also alleged that Obi’s administration failed to meet some obligations, including the payment of workers’ salaries, citing a 2006 memorandum concerning unpaid staff of the Anambra State Water Corporation.
The APC campaign council said the claims contradicted Obi’s previous assertions about his administration’s financial management.
It therefore urged Obi to honour what it described as his previous pledge to withdraw from the presidential race if it was established that his administration left financial liabilities for the state.
The allegations and figures cited by the APC campaign council were presented as part of its political criticism of Obi’s record as Anambra governor.
