The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene as petrol prices rise to as high as N1,500 per litre in some parts of the country.
The union said petrol now sells for about N1,430 per litre in major cities, warning that the increase would further raise transportation costs and the prices of food and other essential goods.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, called for measures to cushion the impact on Nigerians, including reasonable wage awards for workers, increased crude oil supply to local refineries in naira and expansion of petroleum storage capacity.
The union also said government intervention, including subsidies, should not be ruled out during emergencies.
Meanwhile, fuel marketers warned that petrol prices could rise to N2,000 per litre if international crude oil prices continue to increase.
The latest price increase followed the Dangote Refinery’s decision to raise its petrol gantry price from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre effective September 12.
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, urged the government to provide domestic refineries with crude at more stable prices and consider reducing some charges associated with petroleum distribution.
The NLC also called for the rehabilitation of government-owned refineries to increase competition and improve the availability of locally refined petroleum products.
